Gulf of Mexico Water and Desalination Project

Help Us Track Desalination Along the Gulf Coast
Join Our Network to Access the Map & Contribute Data

Desalination is expanding rapidly across the Gulf of Mexico—especially in Texas (around Corpus Christi), offshore near Louisiana, and parts of Florida. Industry leaders claim these projects help address regional drought and water shortages.

But the reality is different.

Much of this desalinated water is being diverted to support the oil, gas, and plastics industries—leaving local communities to deal with the consequences.

We have created an interactive map and data hub documenting existing and proposed desalination projects along the Gulf Coast. Our goal is to build a fuller picture of how desalination is impacting communities and ecosystems—and we need your help to do it.

Our current focus is the U.S. Gulf Coast—but with enough interest, we’re ready to go further.
